More Pictures (from Summer party)

I looked back through here and realized that I never mentioned Ellie's Summer birthday party. I'm not sure why, although I'm sure it had something to do with being huge and pregnant (as you can see in one of the pics)!
Since Ellie's birthday is so close to Christmas and we have to fit in FIVE different Christmases (to accommodate all sides of the family) it just doesn't work out to have a big party with all her friends and family for her actual birthday. So we decided last Summer to throw her a huge 1/2 birthday party. It was a lot of fun and almost everyone was able to make it. She LOVED having everyone here just for her!
Then, on her actual birthday, it's kind of nice to just have something small like what we did yesterday.
Anyways, I wanted to post some pictures so I/we will have them to look back on...

Happy Birthday Ellie!

Happy Birthday Little Princess! Today you will wake up to a room full of pink and purple balloons, make a "Princess Pea" cake (from your favorite show "Super Why") with Mommy, put on your new lavender princess dress and have a wonderful day. Then, when Daddy gets off work, you'll have a "Princess Test" (like Princess Pea does in an episode) that will will include going through a princess tunnel, doing a princess puzzle and finding a little pea under a whole stack of pillows. And when you pass (which of course you will), you'll receive a beautiful new princess crown. Today is your day to become a "real" princess and you have been SO excited about this! Of course, you have ALWAYS been my little princess...

Happy 3rd Birthday Ellie!

First Snow...

and Ellie has an ear infection. :( She has been looking so forward to playing in the snow this year!
I know that Christmas is definitely on her mind right now because when I told her there was a surprise outside she ran to window and instead of exclaiming "Oooh snow..." she said "Look, a Christmas tree!" (about our little spruce tree in the back yard). I had to ask her "And what do you see ON the tree?" before she said "Snow!!!". She then ran and grabbed her snow boots (notice them on in the picture) and said "Now we can go sledding! Yay!".
Darn that ear infection!

Three Months and Almost Three Years

Wow! Josie is now 3 months old! It’s been crazy around here and only just recently do I finally feel like I have this “two children” thing figured out. The logistics of just leaving the house has been tough to figure out, along with how to get around once we get somewhere (Combi side-by-side stroller), how to entertain Ellie while feeding Josie (an embarrassing amount of new toys), how to do their baths (together), bedtime (my wonderful husband helps), which safe but SEPARATE places to leave them both while I shower (a completely childproofed loft), what to do with Josie when I must do other things (bouncy seat or sling), and several other things that seem simple enough but is now so much harder with two! Now that I’m “Super Mom” (ha-ha), I say bring on number 3! I’m so kidding…

Now on to my incredible 3 month old. I must say, the first 2 months with her were really hard. She was very fussy, very gassy and did not sleep or eat well. She always had to be in the sling or held by one of us or she just cried and cried. I tried cutting out different things from my diet, supplementing with different formulas, gas drops, gripe water, colic CDs, you name it. It wasn’t until her two month appointment that the doctor recommended trying medicine for infant reflux. I thought that if a baby had reflux then they vomited all the time (and Josie only did occasionally) but I was wrong. A baby can have reflux with no other symptoms besides being very fussy. The medicine was a God send! She is now on Prevacid and has become a whole new baby! I really dislike that she has to take an adult medicine (especially one that contains aspartame) but the results of it make it impossible to not continue. She immediately became less fussy and over the last month has become the most smiley, happy baby ever. She has even started sleeping some 8 hour stretches at night! Now I just feel terrible knowing, that for the first two months of her life, she was in pretty much constant pain.

Fun things that she can do now are:
Smile- 6 weeks
Laugh- 10 weeks
Reach for toys (and Daddy’s goatee!)- 10 weeks
Roll over- 11 weeks
Sleep through the night!- 11 weeks

Her favorite places to be (besides someone’s arms) are in the sling, the bouncy seat, under her play gym, and some short periods in the Bumbo seat. She does not, however, like the swing or her carseat at all. She loves being talked to and especially loves any attention her Big Sis gives her.

Speaking of the Big Sis, she has really taken to the role. She now tells me whenever Josie is crying (like I can’t hear it as well as she does!), and then proceeds to tell me very matter-of-factly what she wants ("She wants a pacifier Mom"). She also likes to hold her and sing her lullabies that she has made up. It’s so wonderful to watch their relationship blossoming!

Ellie will be 3 next month. She just recently became potty trained and is now my potty super star! She has been in underwear for two weeks now and has only had 3 accidents total (all in the first 2 days). I thought I had waited too long to start, but now I’m glad I did…it has went so much easier than I thought it would. Now we still have to get her moved to her big girl bed (she loves her crib!) and get rid of that nighttime pacifier. One thing at time…

She also started preschool in October and goes Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 ½ hours each day. She LOVES school and acts so independent when we go. She tells me “You can’t go Mommy.”. When I ask how she is going to get there she says “Okay, you drive the car…but you can’t go in!”. Of course I have to walk her in. You think she is embarrassed of her Mom already??

She is also so darn smart!

*Warning: I’m about to overly gush for a few here so don't say I didn't warn you...I just want to be able to look back and remember what all Ellie could do before age 3!

She now knows all her colors, shapes (even the hard ones like trapezoid, parallelogram, octagon etc), recognizes all upper and lower case letters and even know their sounds, recognizes numbers 1-10 and can count to 50. She is really interested in learning to read and write. She can read very easy words like cat by sounding them out and recognizes a few sight words. We are working on blended sounds now and she just loves it! The only thing she can write by herself is her name but we write all kinds of stuff together. We are also working on cutting (finally got her her own scissors made just for left handers), patterns, matching, concepts such as similar and different, opposites etc. We have this really great book called "Get Ready for Pre-K" that I highly recommend. It’s bright and colorful and Ellie loves it! I only work with her when she asks and only as long as she is having fun. She has also mastered all her 24 piece puzzles and now does the 40 piece and even one 60 piece. She has become quite proficient at using a mouse and loves playing on the computer. And, she is learning piano! I bought these decals that stick on the keys and hand wrote out the letters to simple songs such as “Row Your Boat” and “Twinkle, Twinkle” and she just follows along the letters to play. It is so cool!
Her favorite toys to play with are Legos, those big cardboard bricks, her little bicycle and this stop sign on a pole, crayons, playdoh, anything and everything that makes music (she has lots of instruments- even an accordion!), My Little Ponies, Matchbox cars, Little People, her toolkit and her dollhouse.
She is so imaginative and I love listening in on her elaborate conversations that her and her dolls have or that she has when making imaginary phone calls. She still loves everything Dora and her new favorite show is “Super Why!” on PBS HD. She also loves to dance and sing and just plain be silly.

Whew! Guess I had a lot to say about Ellie! Most importantly, though, she is sweet and kind and so loving. And she is growing up WAY too fast!!!

Sorry for such a long post. I know it's mostly my friends who read this so I'm sure you don't mind! :) This is mainly just for me, anyways (and someday Ellie and Josie), to look back at and remember how it was when they were so young. I only wish I had time to write more!

I’ll leave you with a couple of pics...

Due Date

Today was my official due date. It's so hard to believe that this little newborn I've been taking care of the last two weeks should technically not even be here until today. I'm already completely and totally attached to her and can't imagine her not being a part of our family. She really has just fit right in. Here are a couple more pics of our new little angel...

One Week Old

Sisters

I really do hope to write more soon about the delivery and our first two weeks home. Right now, I'm just trying to use any rare moments that I'm not holding or feeding Josie to spend some time with Ellie. She is a great big sister but is definitely putting up a fight for Mommy and Daddy time!

8 lbs 6 ozs, 20.5"

Just a quick post to introduce you to our sweet little Josie. The delivery went perfect and the recovery is slowing coming along. It is nice to be home and I LOVE having a newborn in the house again. Ellie is being a wonderful big sister too! I apologize for taking so long to post and as soon as I have more than just a few minutes, I will write tons more. I really am on cloud nine and can't wait to share everything! Life is good... :)

Today's the Day!

So it's 5:20 AM on Tuesday and I have not slept one single wink. Today is the day I will finally meet our new baby girl! It's been a roller coaster ride the last few weeks so to just finally hold a healthy baby in my arms will be the most wonderful thing I can imagine. I should be coming home on Friday so I will be sure to post all the details shortly after. See you soon!
Oh yeah, and as of right now (less than 4 hours from delivery), we still do not have a name picked out... We have a few ideas but nothing agreed upon yet. Hopefully when we see her, we'll just know the right one. Wish us luck with that... :)

So far so good...

The appointment on Monday went fantastic! The baby passed the non-stress test with flying colors. :) The doctor checked me and I was not dilated at all...hurray! She did say that the baby was really low and that I was 50% effaced already but that doesn't necessarily mean labor is imminent. She even somewhat took me off of bed rest! I am still supposed to limit my walking as much as possible, still no lifting (including Ellie), just nothing strenuous what so ever. It still stinks because I had a lot of pre-baby things planned to do with Ellie that do require a lot of walking that I still won't be able to do, but that's okay. I'll just have to come up with other fun things for us to do at home together. I really want to cherish our last couple of weeks together before little sister turns her world up-side-down. But at least it is looking hopeful that I will make it to my scheduled delivery date. I have another appointment tomorrow and if it goes well, my next one won't be until next Thursday. Every time I go now, Ellie asks me if the doctor is going to take the baby out. When I came home on Monday she asked "Mommy, where's the baby?", fully expecting me to have just had the baby even though I was gone for just an hour and a half! If it could only be that easy... :)

Quick Update

So I'm almost 35 weeks and by the way the things have been going, I'm not sure I am even going to make it my scheduled C-section at 38 weeks! Last Tuesday I had some bright red spotting for about 5 hours that gradually turned to brown. I talked with the doctor 3 times that evening and we decided that since it was just spotting and not very heavy that she would just see me in the morning. At the appt. Wed, she checked my cervix (still closed) and did an ultrasound to check for placenta previa or abruption (no signs of either). She listened to the baby's heartbeat and we also saw her on the ultrasound and since she was showing no signs of distress, I was sent home and put on bed rest. Bed rest is impossible with a 2 year old but I have been doing my best. My husband is helping as much as he can and has pretty much done everything now that it is the weekend. I have still been spotting brown everyday since but the doctor says that brown is okay. If it turns red again or I have any pain or contractions, then I'm supposed to call right away.
Then just today, I lost my mucus plug. I called the doctor again and she assured me that this can happen weeks before you go into labor, but from what I have been reading, it usually happens within a couple of days before labor starts. I never lost it at all with my first pregnancy so I was quite surprised when it happened!
So now I feel like it could literally be any moment that I go into labor and this waiting and not knowing is killing me! I have been reassured that a baby born at 35 weeks should be just fine- they may just have to spend a little time in NICU to monitor breathing and to learn how to eat.
I go tomorrow for another appt. and they will also be doing a non-stress test. I really want to make it until 38 weeks so wish me luck!

Just thought I'd share a few pics of Ellie from the last couple of months...

With some of her playgroup. She's the smallest one!

And, yep, she's still sleeping with the same pacifier(s) that she has since day one. I've decided not to push her on that one and to just trust that it will go away in it's own time. Yeah right...I'm in for trouble! :)

7 months

Wow, I can't believe it's been 2 months since I've posted anything about the pregnancy! Time has really been flying by! I really can't believe that, in just 68 days, we'll have a another little baby. If 7 months has flown by this quickly, then 68 days will seem like next week!
I've had a few OB appointments since my last post and everything is still just as it should be. This has been just a routine, normal, healthy pregnancy so far so I guess that helps explain the lack of posts. I would just be reporting the same thing each time :) The baby is super active and seems like she is constantly doing somersaults in there! I'm visiting the doctor every 2 weeks now (next one is this Thursday) and we are still set to deliver on Aug 28th.
Since my last post, I've been super busy every week mainly just doing things with Ellie. I realize that this is really my last carefree time with her and I want to enjoy the spring/summer with her as much as possible. Our days have been filled with the Zoo, Children's Museum, different parks, our neighborhood pool etc. I also set up a sand table and water table outside and my Dad put together a cute little playhouse so we really have been enjoying the outside as much as possible.
When we're home, I've been trying to get things done around the house. Ellie's "big girl" room is finally done and even so is the nursery (except for paint). We kept Ellie's new room a surprise from her until it was completely done and I thought she would absolute love it...but it really wasn't such a hit! I think it was just too much all at once to spring on her. She loved the doll house but wanted nothing to do with her new bed. We couldn't even get her to sit on it! I tried for about a week to get her to sleep in there and she did lay down long enough for me to read her her nightly story but then she was right back up again. We we're making the mistake of calling her new bed the "big girl bed" and the crib "baby sister's crib". I realized one night when she woke up screaming in the middle of the night and then refused to lay back in the crib because it was "baby sister's crib" that we were doing it all wrong. I felt terrible for making her feel bad about choosing to sleep in the only bed she's ever known and decided to completely stop pushing for her to leave the crib. It wasn't even a week later that she actually asked to sleep in her new bed! Now, I spent most of the night on the floor next to her (not easy while big and pregnant!) because she still tried to get up several times...but she did make it through a whole night! Since then, I give her a choice every night and she mostly still chooses the crib but has spent maybe 4 or 5 complete nights in her bed. Ellie spent the first 7 months in a co-sleeper in our room and I'm sure we'll do the same for this baby so there really needn't be any rush.
So, that's one of first lessons I've learned about having another child. It doesn't automatically make the first one grow up any faster. It doesn't make her any more ready for things that she is not ready for (ie POTTY TRAINING) and the urgency that I feel for her to do these things is lost on her. It only caused unnecessary anxiety for her and incredible GUILT for me. From now on, I will not push Ellie to grow up too fast and will do my best to let her set her own pace. Her world is going to be turned upside down in a couple of months and I need to do everything I can to make it as less traumatic as possible for her. How to do that? I'm not sure... :) I already feel bad when I'm doing things just to prepare for the baby (setting up the nursery, going through clothes, putting equipment back together) and Ellie wants my attention. I can't imagine how Ellie will feel when the new baby is in need of almost all of my attention. I'm sure it will good for her in the long run to not always have my full attention but it is sure going to be an adjustment for her. When I look at the overall picture, though, I feel really blessed that that is my biggest worry. I'm NOT worried about how we are going to afford this new baby, whether we have the room for her or not, who is going to take care of her, or if my husband in is in this for the long haul... It's a reality that some women have those worries and I'm forever grateful that I don't have to have them on top of worrying how I could possibly have enough time and love to go all around.
I truly am blessed. Only 2 months to go!!!

18 Weeks

Sorry I haven't written more about the ultrasound yet. I'm only able to post when Ellie is asleep and lately she has been skipping naps so that leaves nighttime when I just want to be with my hubby. Tonight he is in the recording studio, though, so I will finally share a few more details.
IT'S A GIRL!!! I know I already told you, but it's fun to tell over and over. :) I was secretly hoping for Ellie to get to have a little sister but had prepared myself for the opposite by thinking about all the wonderful joys a little boy would bring us too. When the tech finally announced "It looks like we have a girl!", I actually got teary eyed. Images of two little giggling girls flashed through my head...tea parties, playing dress up, sharing secrets, always having that built in best friend by your side... I'm sure those of you with sisters might tell me that it's not always so blissful, but that's how I (who grew up with three older brothers) have always imagined it. I feel so blessed to be able to witness that sisterly bond.
Eric and Ellie were both able to be there and Ellie did much better this time. She was still very clingy and held on to her Daddy for dear life but she made it through it with no tears. Eric kept pointing out the baby to her on the monitor but I'm sure it was hard for her to understand. Most of the ultrasound was done in 2D and then at the very end we switched to 4D. The picture from 4D doesn't do it justice of how neat it actually was. I could see my little baby inside of me so clearly, it was truly amazing. I could see her features and all her movements and that she had her little hand up by her face. We taped it and I've already watched it a couple of times again already.
We had a quick visit with the doctor afterwards and she said all the images and measurements from the ultrasound look great. I asked if I would be able to have any more ultrasounds and she said we don't need to do anymore unless, of course, we suspect a problem but that we may be able to go ahead sneak one in again at 36 weeks. I would definitely feel much better about delivering at 38 weeks if we got to do another one (to check her size) so hopefully that's what will happen.
After we got home, Ellie made a few very cute calls to our parents and announced the news. Ellie has said all along it was a baby girl or sister so it was really fun to hear her tell her grandparents and actually be right.
That's right, Ellie, we are being blessed with another precious, little you...

Ellie's Big Girl Room

Here is how we will be doing Ellie's new big girl room. Only the doll house has been delivered so far and it is CUTE! I can't wait for the rest to show up so we can get it all put together. The teddy bear tea party mural is all 3D wooden pieces that attach to the wall. We are getting the lavender set and will be painting the room similar to the picture with the grass and sky. It takes 4-6 weeks to come in so we have a little time to get the painting done. I can't wait though! I think she will love it!
